Why a target size beats a quality slider
Most compressors offer Low, Medium and High and leave you to guess. That is fine when you simply want a smaller file, and useless when an upload form demands under 5 MB. You compress, check, compress again, and end up at 1.2 MB when 4.8 MB would have looked considerably better.
This works the other way round. You name the ceiling, and the tool searches for the highest image quality that still fits underneath it, then reports the setting it landed on. When a target genuinely cannot be reached — a 300-page scan will not become 500 KB and remain readable — it says so instead of handing back something unusable.
Unlike the browser tools on this site, this one runs on our server, because the search re-encodes the document several times over and that is more than a tab can carry. The file is deleted once the job finishes.
