How is reading time worked out?+
At 200 words per minute, the usual convention for prose. Technical material reads slower.
Is my text stored?+
No. Counting happens in this tab.
How is a word counted?+
Anything separated by whitespace counts as one word. So a hyphenated term like well-known counts once, and a number counts the same as a word.
Do the character counts include spaces?+
Both figures are shown. Characters counts everything, spaces and line breaks included; Characters (no ws) strips all whitespace, which is usually the number a form length limit is actually measuring.
